The West’s fascination with NOWHERE MAN or Utopian ideas has been as addictive as breathing is
to life. There is a certain insanity to
this as it entertains faulty perceptions, inappropriate actions and delusions
of superiority.
We saw this in 1095 when Europe launched the “Holy
Crusades” to convert the Islam infidels of Persia to Christian beliefs, as NOWHERE MAN of the Christian West knew
best, only to be soundly defeated at Tripoli by the Muslims in 1291, ending that
misadventure.
The West turned its attention to the New World in
the 16th century sending missionaries and soldiers to that unspoiled
Paradise to convert the natives to the Christian faith, and in the process,
destroying New World civilizations.
The implicit belief of the NOWHERE MAN invaders of
the West was that it had a superior civilization and religion with a divine
duty to convert this New World Paradise into the NOWHERE LAND of the West. The corollary was that the few were ordained
to rule and the rest were meant to follow wherever NOWHERE MAN might find
himself.
A disruption in this Utopian continuity is
personified in Andrew Jackson’s U.S. Presidency (1829 – 1837) where he took on
the NOWHERE MAN of his time in industry and banking and drove him back into
NOWHERE LAND. He changed the American
calculus of leadership, which now in the 21st century has slipped
back into NOWHERE MAN and NOWHERE LAND.
